Why tell stories among friends?

Over the years, I’ve encountered plenty of people who pretend to be disabled in their interactions with me, or other members of the transabled community. Some are rather cunning and good, and it is difficult to catch them in the act. Others are rather clumsy and red flags are waving in front of me like a windsock in a hurricane. It always saddens me somewhat that they feel the need to lie to their "sibblings in BIID".

Don’t get me wrong, I fully understand the need and desire to be perceived as what you feel you should be. Trust me on that, if anyone does, I do!

But it seems strange to me. One would think that the advantage of interacting with other transabled individuals is in being able to share common experiences, and learn from their experiences. It is very liberating to be able to talk about something with someone who trully "gets it". There is no one better to be able to talk about these transabled issues than other transabled folks.

It’s hard enough having to lie about who and what you are to everyone around you without cutting off bridges within a community of people who should be able to support you and nurture you.

I don’t condone lies in general, but I do understand the need to tell a lie to live your own truth. There are just many other outlets out there to do so. As the proverb says: "Don’t shit in your own backyard"

I’ve recently been communicating with someone whom I suspect is telling me nice big stories, pretending to be someone and something they aren’t. And my message to you (you know who you are) is: Come clean now, let’s start fresh, eh?

I’m curious. Did this person ever get back to you?

Nope, never got back to me. But then, stopped emailing altogether as well, which seems to indicate I touched a big fat nerve :-o

About Sean

Sean is transabled. His body image is that of an L2 paraplegic. He has been living pretty much 100% of his public life from a wheelchair for the last decade, but hasn't found peace of mind (and is unlikely to until he does become a para).
