Two months as an amputee

I should have given you all a recent update - its now 2 months since my amp and things are just so great, I have no words to describe the happiness in which I live each day since the surgery. I woke up from surgery without pain and this happy feeling which has never left

An amputee on crutches on a beach.

An amputee on the beach.

My home is not fully wheelchair friendly, so I use forearm crutches too around and out of home. In the begining my stump was still a little tender on the inside but now I can use the muscles, hop, etc…. without any pain. No phantoms except a little pins and needles once in a while - but it doesn’t hurt, it’s just a weird sensation.

As for managing things, I do everything as before. I have no help around the house and I take care of my own home - half of it from the chair and the other half I manage on crutches. I drive, go to the beach and my life is as before - there is nothing I cannot do.

I won’t be getting a prosthesis. I never wanted one. To me, but not to other wannas, it is stupid getting rid of a leg and replacing it. My mind would not accept seeing something else in place of my leg. It would be as if I was not an amputee.

Neighbours, friends and most family have been fine. They see I have a very good outlook on things and so they just follow on. Of course I had a life threatening infection too and a useless leg just before and I think that has helped them accept the amputation too.

As for being shock when people see me - I don’t really know as no one is going to be that honest in saying that ‘they are shocked’. I think they see a very happy, bouncy person with a whole new look on things and certainly someone who fights to get things done.

Hello Lily! I just wanted to say that I am glad you are doing well and that you have finally found at least some relief. I also wanted to add that, being a non-transabled person myself, I don’t claim to understand what you and other individuals have gone through/are going through, but that there is hope for us (so-called) “normal folks”…and we may be few and far between, but there ARE people like me out there who are trying to understand and become more educated about your experiences. We do care about you, and we hope for the best for you and others with similar problems. Keep us informed! :)

I’m happy to see that you’re verry happy.
I also want to rid myself of a leg and you give me hope that one day I too will be as happy as you:)

Thank you for your comments. Its now the 3rd month and everything is going really very well. Nothing better could have happened and I would not have wished it another way.

I hope you don’t mind and I don’t know if this is the place to ask, how did you lose your leg?
