The Sound Of Crutches

Crutches make an unmistakable sound. I can’t help myself, when I hear that sound, I turn around and I have a look. I’m not attracted by people with disabilities though. I cannot really explain why I do this.

The sound of crutches. A bit of a thud when the crutch hits the ground, followed by a metallic click if it’s a metal forearm crutch, and then the swoosh of clothing going through. If it is a wooden crutch, then it’s a bit of a creaking sound than a metallic click. But it’s all the same, you can’t miss it.

Today, it was a military guy with a short leg cast that made me look. I don’t turn around obviously, I tend to be a bit more tactful about it.

I’m not sure why I look. Curious about the gear, the hardware is part of it I guess. Looking for a sense of shared experience in a way I guess – there is often a tacit acknowledgement of being in the same boat, when meeting someone with a long-term condition.

Oh humm, rambling again.

Ah. The sound of crutches. It’s better than bird song, therapeutic as music for relaxation with a tempo of time itself.

I do look discretely but only in the context of my technical training you understand. But I NEVER follow – unless I’ve forgotten something in the car.

I’d like to use the sound of crutches as percussion in a forthcoming musical arrangement.
