Reject Leads To Harm

I just read an article that saddened me greatly, about a 17 year old teen who castrated himself. Apparently, this kid is transgendered. He spoke to his parents, and sought medical assistance. But he got nowhere. No help at all. So he took things into his own hands. And nearly bled to death in the process…
We’re in much the same situation, with BIID. Medical assistance is really hard to come by. We’re left with attempts at self-injury. Those of us needing an amputation are "luckier", they can conceivably use dry-ice. But then, that can really wreck their kidneys. Horror stories of shotguns, tree grinder, trains, and botched surgeries abound.
How many of us need to nearly bleed to death before we’re taken seriously?
I’m sad for this kid. Sad that he was hurting that much. Sad that he sought help, and was turned away. It hurts people, it really hurts. I *know*, I’ve been there. And had it been as "easy" as cutting off my dangly bits, I probably would have done that a long time ago.
And I am angry. For him. For us. For ME! I seethe with anger at the injustice of it all.

I do indeed have friends who have resorted to castrating themselves and/or attempted to cut off their own penis. Medical assistance for people with gender issues has been very slow in coming and is still radically dependent on where one happens to live.
My experiences with physicians in my early twenties were horrendously humiliating. The standard treatment for hermaphrodites was a large dose of disrespect. A couple of decades later, in a different country, I was amazed at the consideration and kindness shown by physicians.
But now here we are again, with BIID. People do in fact die from this, just as they have died because of gender. Compassion is such a rare commodity.
