Inside I’m Dancing

I just finished watching a movie called Inside I’m dancing by Damien O’Donnel. I really enjoyed it. In a nutshell, the story goes like this: "Rebel" is shipped to live in a care home for disabled folks. Causes a stir. moves out with another of the home’s resident. Friendship develops.

I won’t give up the ending, but if you know anything about Duchesne, you won’t be overly surprised.

I particularly enjoyed the fact that so much of the movie was "spot on" in terms of disability "experience".

That said, why, but why, do they always take people without disabilities to play the role of people with disabilities? Ok, I buy that there are probably not many, if any, actors with Duchesne around, but guys with CP??? Not to take anything away from his role, he did a pretty decent job. But would have been nice to use someone with "real" CP. I think. <shrug>

Despite that, it is refreshing to see a movie where people with disabilities aren’t portrayed as either the Mega Villain, or the Mega Hero. Portrayed as people, with good parts and bad parts to them (gimps can be assholes!). And in truth, while the disability aspect is really present, it certainly can be looked at as incidental to the actual story.

I certainly recommend it to anyone who wants to get a bit of a peek at some disability "events". Like being shown a flat at the top of a flight of steps, and the agent is just oblivious. I won’t say anymore. Find it on DVD :)
