BIID apologist?

Someone called me a "BIID apologist" today. I was not sure what that meant. To me, an apologist is someone who makes apologies. And that’s what it is, it’s just that I did not know that particular meaning of the word. It’s cool, I learned something new today :)

Dictionary.com defines an apologist as:

a person who makes a defense in speech or writing of a belief, idea, etc.

By that token, I most certainly am a BIID apologist.

So I shall go to bed less stupid tonight, thank you mate. Less stupid, but no less of a BIID apologist!

Actually, an apologist is not someone who makes apologies. The word comes from the Greek “apologia” meaning “to speak in defense”.

This reminds me of a story I once read about a Catholic apologist. At a dinner party, someone once asked him what he did for a living. He replied that he was a Catholic apologist. The other man replied “You must be a busy man, the Catholic Church sure has a lot to apologize for!” While that may be the case, the apologist’s job wasn’t about apologizing for his church, but about speaking in defense of it.

The same thing could be said about us, and BIID. I don’t apologize for having BIID; that’s beyond my control. I will just speak in defense of those who have it, and our right to treatment.

Hmmm, Claire, I guess you misread what I wrote, because your comment is exactly what I was intending to say :)

I meant ‘Making apologies = speaking in defense of’. Does not mean “apologising” in the sense most people know and use. :)
