Accusations of leadership, again

Over the last few months, I’ve been told by a handful of people that they resented me for my position of "leadership" in the BIID community. I wrote about that in a previous post. I was recently again accused of being a self-appointed leader. I was going to write an entire new post about it, but considering that I already wrote about it in February, I will let you all read this entry again.

Yesterday I received an email stating:

Also I’m sick of the few people who are self appointed leaders of the community that try to police what people say and do.

This was my answer:

I am not a self-appointed leader of the community.  I run two very popular websites, and I’m not shy about making my opinions known.  I believe I have earned respect from some people, though obviously not everyone.  If people chose to perceive me as a “leader” of the community (I don’t even believe we *have* a community), then, that’s your problem.  But don’t you go accusing me of taking a lead, much less of having sinister intent.

I guess I should feel flattered somehow that people have this view of me. Maybe they see me as more important than I see myself. I don’t know. I don’t really care either. I’m just doing my thing.

To be honest, this infighting is getting to me. I wish we were able to all agree to some basic things. United, we would have a much better chance. Heck, even if we agreed to disagree, the atmosphere would be much more pleasant. But this is not to be the case. Human nature I suspect.

In any case, read my thoughts on "leadership" in that older post: Leadership?

Sean, you are intelligent, knowledgeable, and experienced. There is a good reason that this is the one website I like to check several times a day. There’s always going to be some people who will complain about anything. I wouldn’t worry about it.

Pfffffffffffffffft. That’s ridiculous. There is NO such thing on the Internet as a “self-appointed leader”. Nobody is forced to read this or any other website. You don’t like it…start your own website.

Exactly. Like what I tried to post earlier (but the site didn’t post my comment, for some odd reason), I don’t see anyone else stepping up. Unless that person is willing to step up, then there should be nothing to complain about.

Something someone said on another board pretty much hit the nail on the head: “Similarly, real leadership is demonstrated when others start to follow a person
willingly — not when the person asks to be followed.”

If Sean is a leader, it’s because some people willingly follow. He’s never asked for it, EVER.

Those people don’t deserve your concern, or ours. Claire has hit the nail right on the head. Let it go, Sean, and keep on keeping on.
