Chances are a lot of the people who will read this post have a profile on myspace, or have at least had some interaction on myspace. That just goes to show what a popular medium it is. It’s the only reason why I bother to have a myspace profile. I originally saw it as a chance to further spread the word about BIID and my website, this was back in the day when I was starting to realise what a valuable tool the internet was. I’m starting to think myspace does more harm than good.

I clearly state on my profile that I am transabled.

I’m a transabled chick from NZ. I feel that I’m a T12 paraplegic stuck in a "normal" body. This is also known as Body Identity Integrity Disorder.

I also have a picture on my page, one of my blurred pictures from my site. I’m signed up with Life Rolls On because I like getting the newsletters and reading about what’s going on in the disability community.

For some bizzare reason people invite me to groups, and send friends requests, simply because they see my picture and that I’m signed up with LRO. I challenge anyone to create a new myspace page. Post a picture of yourself portraying some form of disability, sign up for a cause (like LRO). Then in your profile write whatever you please. You could write for example "I like doing dodgy stuff to dogs in public swimming pools", something weird, socially inexcusable. Leave your page for a month or so, let it stew. Come back and see the number of group/friends requests you’ve gotten from people who simply haven’t bothered to read your page.

Myspace is just a popularity contest. Organisations create pages and causes in myspace hoping to create awareness for themselves but they don’t even bother to read who they are interacting with. Chances are no one is bothering to read about them either. I left the MSN craze back in high school, surely everyone else can too and start using this stuff properly.

To that end I’ve started a cause as a bit of a test. Please join up if you are passionate about research, recognition and a cure for BIID. I don’t know where this test will go, I will just have to see.

About Sophie

Sophie is transabled. She has been using a wheelchair more and more, and has wheeled "full time" for several months. She is now stuck back at her parents house without a wheelchair and having to suppress her transabledness. She looks forward to the day where she will be a para (Complete T12).
