Up And Down Revisited

Written by Dan on Wednesday, September 23, 2009

Before amputation, my BIID was up and down a lot.  Now I am much more stable, but there is still some up and down. Before, when BIID was up, I really despised being what I was.  When it was down, I was mildly unhappy about being what I was.

Now, when it is up, I am so pleased with myself I could almost burst.  When it is down, I feel that being an amputee is a mild nuisance, but I am still glad to be one.

Before amputation, I figured I would be ahead of the game if I regretted amputation 25% of the time or less.  So far, I haven’t regretted it at all.  When people go on a hike that is too much for me to do on crutches, I am a little annoyed that I can’t go.  I ask myself, would I rather go on the hike or be one-legged?  There is no uncertainty at all, I would rather be one-legged.  Even if BIID is down at the time.  This shows that I have not gotten rid of BIID, but I have gotten rid of the unhappiness it caused.

When I have a prosthesis, I expect to have my cake and eat it too.  But I don’t think I will want to wear the prosthesis unless there is a good reason to.

Thank you for the honest post-amputation update. I think this is important stuff for all of us, and I’d love to hear more from you. Please update us on how things go with a prosthesis too.
