The year 2008 was quite eventful for me in terms of BIID. The excitement continued unabated in 2009. Here are summaries for comparison.
The Year 2008
- First ever explicit disclosure about BIID.
- Interview with Michael First.
- Discovered transabled.org.
- First use of leg braces in public.
- Bought first wheelchair.
- Bought second wheelchair.
- First use of wheelchair in public.
- BIID related psychotherapy.
- Full time crutching at work.
- Told my GP.
- Amazed at how much I could write about.
The Year 2009
- Skied off cliffs with intent. Plenty of spectacular bruises.
- First flight as a person with disability.
- Lost virginity; with someone who believed I’m paraplegic.
- Disability parking permit.
- GP sanctioned orthotist visits.
- Full time left KAFO at work.
- First time accidentally falling out of wheelchair in public.
- Double roll-over 75 mph car wreck while wearing both leg braces. Didn’t get lucky.
- Urethral catheterisation at hospital after car wreck was good.
- Three concussions. Yay! No wait, that wasn’t what I wanted.
- Full time wheelchair at work.
- First business presentation while in wheelchair.
- Gave talk to clinical psychology graduate students about BIID.
- Number of people IRL told about my BIID reaches around a hundred.
- Extreme embarrassment about how much crap I write.
The Year 2010
- Anybody care to place bets?

Ah; it’s that time of year again! To be sure there were a number of firsts in 2010; such as my first flight with a wheelchair, my first time wearing an AFO, and more. However, one thing stands out compared with which all else pales in significance. I feel I have reached a state of positive mental health hitherto unrealised. I am awed by how many people have helped me in this. If you feel you may have contributed, then almost certainly it is so.

Alicia and I happened to be at the library together yesterday. I was on the internet while she selected some books. She returned while I had this post on the screen, so she read it. She said “It makes you sound completely insane!” Later in the day she referred to me as a “bottomless spring of wellness.” Hmm. Take your pick, I guess.
