I’m Mad As Hell

Written by Ada on Friday, February 6, 2009

Let me apologize in advance if this offends anyone, as that is certainly not my intent. But, I’m outraged.

News out of California this week was a woman gave birth to octuplets. They thought she was going to have seven babies, but during delivery, they realized she was carrying eight babies. The hospital said, these things happen with multiple births, and went on about the miracle of life, blah, blah, blah.

As news breaks, it turns out these are not the first children for the woman. She reportedly has six children under the age of eight.

So in the grand old US of A, there is at least one medical professional (and I use that term with disdain) that does not think it medically irresponsible to allow a woman fertility treatments and position her to have fourteen, FOURTEEEN, children under the age of eight.

And in the same land, there is not one, NOT ONE, medical professional who will remove a healthy limb to assuage the anguish of a person with BIID?

I think that is TOTALLY F*CKED UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am not offended, Ada. I agree. I don’t think women should get fertility treatment if they cannot conceive naturally. There are too many children already in this overcrowded world without pandering to the selfishness of people who can only find meaning in parenthood.
So flame me. I’ll say it again. Why?

It’s a vagina, not a clown car.

I disagree with Cath about fertility treatment, I do think it should be given to couples who are unable to concieve naturally after a reasonable time trying but there really should be limits. A woman who already has 6 children under 8 years old shoud be refused whether she’s paying privately or getting some other method of funding.

Marie – LOL!!!

And I just want to clarify – I’m not opposed to fertility treatments per se, but when the medical community throws the “first do no harm” at us with BIID, it makes me wonder what the yahoo who gave the woman treatments was thinking.

I mean really…First do no harm to WHICH ONE of the 15 individuals directly related to this event???

For me, the hypocrisy in “first do no harm” is most brutally illustrated by all the unwanted and medically unnecessary genital surgeries that are performed on intersex babies without the remotest consideration of informed consent. If you go to any intersex website you will find that the majority of people to whom this was done are EXTREMELY pissed off about it. The number one issue for intersex politics is to try to prevent surgeons from performing these surgeries without informed consent.

It is true that on occasion there is medical necessity for genital surgery on intersex babies. Most frequently this is because there is no urinary outlet, and that needs to be fixed. However, the variety is huge and the position of the urinary outlet may not be obvious. For example a friend of mine has the urethra emptying into the top of his (yes, I said his) vagina. I found out about a year ago, through reading my mother’s diaries, that as a newborn the location of my peehole wasn’t obvious, and I also wasn’t peeing. My mother detailed conversations with a couple of nurses about whether I would need surgery for this (I didn’t).

One of the issues is that the state of brain imaging, or any other medical technology, is not such that it is possible to make a gender determination of a newborn. The most reliable determination is made by waiting until a child is around five years old, at which point they will be able to accurately tell you what gender they are. If the genitalia of a newborn are ambiguous one simply has no clue at all what gender they are going to grow up to be. The most common undesired surgery is for the genitalia to be made more female (simply because it’s easier that way). That means that there are a lot of intersex guys out there who are REALLY angry that a surgeon cut off their dangly bits without their consent.

Explain to me how this is “first do no harm”!!!! And yet we can’t get bits cut off (or whatever) even though we know exactly what we are asking for and can give informed consent. AND, in my opinion, for some of us it IS medically necessary. UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!

Sorry about the rant. This undesired genital surgery was done to some of my friends without their consent.

If you “grant” a woman reproductive rights, that door swings both ways.

I think she should have had a lot, and I mean a lot, of psychological help.

If she’d an eight abortions, would you still be as offended?

This whole planet is absurd. How can I trust “professionals” who make decisions like the ones discussed above to tell me what the best way to deal with my feelings is?
Reading posts like these reassures me that my decision to construct and wear my braces is as logical and well-informed as anyone else’s advice or prescription could ever be.
