Documentary about BIID - Interesting approach

I have been approached by a documentary maker who wants to do a show about body integrity identity disorder. She isn’t the first to approach me and is unlikely to be the last. But so far, I like her approach and her ideas, and invite anyone to contact her directly if they might be interested in participating.

Kate Monaghan (see her website at http://katemonaghan.co.uk) is a young woman with a disability who has produced other documentaries. She writes:

"The programme I want to make is that of a ‘real’(!) disabled person meeting people with BIID to find out what it is that makes them who they are."

I think this approach could be really interesting, particularly since Kate states she wants to offer a human view of transabled individuals, rather than a sensationalistic one.

She is hoping to find a few people willing to appear on camera and discuss their BIID. And while I pointed out to her how risky it is for a transabled individual to come out in such a public manner, I also agree with her that until someone (or several someones) take that first step, we don’t really stand a chance to get society to better understand/accept us.

But then, there have been people who’ve been publicly advocating, like Lily, or Gregg Furth, or others and appeared on camera. These were good. But we need more. So, if you’re "game", do drop her a line. Kate is looking principally for people in the UK or near the UK, but will be glad to speak to anyone, anywhere.

I find it a little funny, I haven’t heard from Kate since I sent her my reply saying I’d be willing to help her…maybe it’s just me.

Sophie - her initial reply to me was really quick but a more recent one took two days. Remember that we’re in the UK so the time skew is worse. :-)

I get the impression that Kate replies to everyone.

She initially emailed Sean and I through my yahoo group. I responded and Sean responded. This was at least a week ago. I haven’t heard from her since.

Hi all! Thanks for your comments. Please be assured that I will reply to everyone personally, even if this does take a couple of days (which I apologise for). Sophie, I sent you a long reply last week; this obviously hasn’t come through to you - I will try re-sending it ASAP. Sorry for the inconvenience! Thanks, Kate

Kate has not yet replied to my e-mail sent a few weeks ago. I am happy to share thoughts on leg-brace BIID with her and I am in the UK.

About Sean

Sean is transabled. His body image is that of an L2 paraplegic. He has been living pretty much 100% of his public life from a wheelchair for the last decade, but hasn't found peace of mind (and is unlikely to until he does become a para).
