Dear Diary

Going through boxes of old books this weekend I came across an old diary. I confess I wasn’t a very regular writer – in a 3-year period there are a total of 13 entries. I quickly read through them, and came across an entry, dated 1981.

We were visiting the family of two twin brothers who have Cerebral Palsy. I noted this fact, adding "I like wheeling around in ——’s wheelchair. It’s fun." I was 10 years old.

I was surprised to see the entry, as I have no memory of the diary or this particular event. But then again, I wasn’t surprised at all, because my fascination with wheelchairs goes back farther than this. What surprised me most, though, is to come across actual, physical proof, for the very first time, of my early transability.
