I'm not much of one for the EXTREMELY atrophied legs, though I do prefer a little thinner than normal. But I'm more curious, how long would it take for the muscles to be atrophied so bad that you really just can't walk or stand. To the point that you are so weak your legs wont hold up your body.

I'll weigh in with my two cents. It is irrelevant to me whether my legs are or are not atrophied. I neither wish for it nor desire for it not to be so. Likewise, atrophied legs in another are for me neither a positive nor a negative quality.

However, I do find extreme muscularity, as in the picture, to be extraordinarily unattractive.

Just thought I'd mention. My idea of a human nightmare is a body builder's physique. Poepl who want and strive for that give me the creeps. So I guess it's like that for Drew, eh?
Difference is, I would have no desire to ban body building or personally malign those who indulge in it, no matter that it makes me feel nauseous.

Atrophy. What a lovely word that is. I only require one leg like that, plus an LLD of 4 inches.

This reminded me of the time I was having physio following a knee op and 2 months of walking with crutches. The physio said I'd lost muscle. I disagreed but he got the tape measure out. He then proceeded to wire me with electrodes for electro-stimulation of the muscles (I was in too much pain to move the knee joint for normal exercise). Thankfully he left the room for 20 minutes during which time I switched the machine off!

Drew, I am sorry you are stunned at this "BIID hogwash". For people who haven't heard of it before, it is indeed surprising and mind boggling. I assure you, however, that it is not hogwash. It is a very real condition with a very real impact on people. Then again, perhaps you would say that depression is hogwash? Or that bi-polar, or schizophrenia aren't real conditions? Let me guess: You don't believe in the reality of transsexual feelings either, it's all hogwash, isn't it? Perhaps it is the same kind of hogwash when someone with an SCI isn't able to stand on their own, because they aren't wanting it bad enough, aren't working at it hard enough.

Drew, the 2nd person from the left is an armp amputee. I am not showing my face because the world is full of people who are angry with me because I have an illness which has no cure and over which I have no control. People who not only don't understand, but don't *want* to understand. A bit like you.

Perhaps not the best photo of atrophied legs, but it's one that was available royalty free from one of the stock photo websites. I won't post photos taken without people's consent/knowledge, particularly for use on a site like this.

I think atrophied legs are BEAUTIFUL! Okay, this one picture here is not a great example. But in general, atrophied legs on an otherwise healthy person at normal weight can be really, really breathtakingly gorgeous. So sue me.

The atrophy pictured looks more like malnutrution than lack of use, ugly to me. I'm with Stumpy.

I'm also not really into very atrophied legs. My goal is for my legs to be just a little thinner than normal. Just enough that you could tell that they ARE thinner than normal.

Me personally, I don't care much for antrophied legs at all, I think this is most due to the fact that pritty much all of my wheelchair friends or accuantiances were always people with like CP, MS, MD, and SB, so they still had some movements and their legs stayed in shape. To me, antrophied legs look disgusting sitting there in the frame of the chair all shrivered up.

It has always been my opinon that when I meet my special someone and if she doesn't have any movement in her legs that I am going to try to get her to work out her muslces with Tens units to keep them in shape.

Personally I think that is a good suggestion for any paralyzed person to properly keep their body fit, sure they may never use their legs to walk again or anything, but it is good to keep their body healthy and to keep some weight to their legs as well for easy balancing of their chair.

Just my opinion on the matter.

I've started to notice that my right calf is starting to get thinner compared to my un-braced leg. I've also lost a lot of strength in my calf muscle from wearing my AFO full time.
