Anger, and a misconception

So there’s been a lot of arguing and venting, and all in all aggressive exchanges on that forum I mentionned in my last post here. As it turns out, it was not shut down, just made "members only". And moved. It has now been closed, but is still viewable I think. But it’s not really worth going there. First, they don’t want us there. Definite NIMBY approach but that is their god given right. More importantly, the majority aren’t willing to have an intelligent conversation about the whole thing.
They are way too busy being angry to pay attention. I don’t begrudge them anger, we all are angry about *something*. Doesn’t mean I don’t wish they were a bit more open. There are plenty of folks with disabilities that are open minded. Yeah, most of them were shocked at first, but then, they got to know me, got to understand better (in as much as anyone can understand).
And to be fair, some transabled folks are very good at flying off at the handle too, not helping a fairly calm and straightforward conversation.
There are a few on that board who at least showed a willingness to step back and consider, without making off the cuff remarks. Thank you if you’re one of them and reading this.
But I guess what this is coming back to is anger. Their anger. It suddenly dawned on me. It’s hard enough for people with disabilities to accept us, but the community at that forum has one main goal: Curing SCI’s. Is it any surprise then that someone coming along and saying they actually want to be a para would anger them? I mean, let’s face it folks. If your passion is one thing, and someone tells you that their passion is just the opposite, chances are more than likely that things will end up with sparks and flames.
Oh hummm.
On a side note, Wheelchair Dancer posts and mentions BIID on his blog. He also talks more about pretending on that blog. I just read it fairly quickly and will come back to it, with a more rested head. His comments and concerns are most definitely good ones, and I wish I could appease them in some ways.
In the meantime, there appears to be one major misconception that I need to clear up. BIID is NOT about sexual fetishes. Please do not confuse "devotees" with BIID. While some people who have BIID are also devotees, that’s not the case for everyone. Not by a long shot. For me, it has nothing sexual at all. It would be a bit silly to be turned on by wanting to be a para, considering that my "apparatus" wouldn’t function "properly", now, wouldn’t it? But that’s just an aside…
