Today’s post might anger some people. So be it. May 1, 2011 is Blogging Against Disablism Day. I’m going to talk about a form of disablism – or disability discrimination, that is not obvious at first sight. I’m going to talk about how so many transgendered people express virulent "opposition" to transabled people and how that is discrimination.

I’ve just read an opinion piece on the Baptist Press, ranting against surgery for both transsexuals and transabled folks. It always annoys me somewhat when apparently inteligent people built their argument while totally ignoring one of the premises. Like so many other people, Kelly Boggs (the author) completely ignores the fact that psychotherapy and pharamacotherapy haven’t done much at all, if anything, to help with Body Integrity Identity Disorder.

I have a confession to make. I am a feminist. Umm, no, I don’t hate men. You don’t have to hate men in order to be a feminist. Oh, yeah, I also have a sense of humor. In a recent series of comments on A comparison between transsexuality and transableism, which had 117 comments at the time of this writing, Nikki Sullivan asked several most interesting questions, and made many good points. One of the Google Alerts I receive pointed me to a transgender resource site’s forum. Someone had posted a link to Sophie’s It’s All About You. And of course, the discussion that ensued had some good and bad, backed up by a lot of misunderstanding and erroneous facts, if not complete lack of facts. As usual, I do my best to provide people with the right information so they can make an informed decision. The thread was locked after a couple responses to my post.
