Body Integrity Identity Disorder in the DSM, or not?

As those of you who read this blog regularly know, I support the inclusion of Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID) in the DSM. As you also know, there are many who oppose that position. I recently read a most interesting interview with Vivianne Namaste, discussing issues of "politics" of transsexuality. Some of the things there make you think.

In response to Dominick Evan’s anti-BIID post

Dominick Evans, transgendered and disabled, is anti-Body Integrity Identity Disorder. Quite vehemently so. He blogged about his perspective on BIID as a Transgendered Person in a Wheelchair. I am responding here, because not only is he anti-BIID, but he’s also too chickenshit and petty-minded to publish comments that contradict him on his blog. He gets so much wrong it’s not even funny. I don’t expect everyone to support BIID, but in truth, you can’t "disagree" with it. BIID is real.

An email exchange with Dr. First about BIID.

A recent post I made on this site and a Yahoo! discussion group prompted a lot of discussion and brought up the nearly age old question of “Does BIID include anyone who wants a different condition than being an amputee?”.  I maintain that it doesn’t matter what condition is sought, we all suffer from BIID.  Some agree.  Others disagree.  Others yet are quite vehement in their refusal to have BIID include anything else than “amputation”.  And so I decided to go to the source.  I emailed Dr. Michael First, who coined the term Body Integrity Identity Disorder.
