A few evenings ago during a commercial break, there came on television an ad whose purpose was to raise awareness about reducing the social stigma of mental illness. I was truly shocked. It never occurs to me that such a stigma still exists.

Several of you have got me thinking about why so many of us are, or have been, ashamed of how we feel. Sometimes you write posts that haunt me. One such is Silent’s "I have BIID, I am Buried Alive". There is a deep emotional honesty there, and a lot of it is about shame.

Recently, my psychotherapist and I discussed the chronology of various mental illnesses that I have had. We wanted to see how they might have arisen, and how they have interacted with each other. It doesn’t bother me if people think I am mentally ill, or insane, or whatever. I have never met anyone who I did not consider to be insane. So, here is my laundry list, in chronological order:

There are many different points of view about our need to acquire a physical impairment. Some people perceive it as a psychological condition, other people see it as a lifestyle choice, others still see it as a variation on extreme body modification. Some people embrace the word ‘transabled‘, other people resent it. Obviously, we can’t all agree on the same things. But couldn’t we unite to promote our ultimate, common, goal?
