I was recently reading Sean’s post "BIID Sufferer? Language and concepts subtleties". It’s about the nuances of meaning that different words convey. There is a word that is used on this site sometimes that really bothers me. That word is "pretending".

I’m home alone for a few days and so of course I immediately put my neck brace on. I don’t have a wheelchair – that’s not as easy to hide as a case full of neck and back braces.

One topic of heated debate with many of the people who hear about BIID through articles such as the one about Dr. Ryan’s suggestion that surgery might be appropriate is one of "who gets to pay for it?". And it is a good question.

Dominick Evans’ response to our response…
I just don’t have the heart to continue this debate. The thing is, if I’ve seen three mental health professionals, a medical doctor and a behavioral neurologist and been told by all and sundry “there’s nothing we can do for BIID”, and persevered ANYWAY and am still in therapy despite this negative reaction from the very community that I’ve gone to for help, and people like Dominick choose to state that “I don’t believe any of them have truly tried to change through therapy and medication,”…well, there’s nothing more to say, is there? What’s the point? Bah.
