My Own Visit To The GP

by Sean - 4 February 2009

I went to my GP mostly to renew a prescription of sleeping pills. He’d given me sleeping pills last July, and the 30 day’s worth lasted 7+ months, so that’s not too bad. I use them only when I really need them, when I’m going through a patch of a lot of nightmares, and I tend to use them on weekends only, because they leave me groggy for the day. If I take half, then they don’t knock me out enough to kill the nightmares.

Psychiatrist tells me “I cannot help you with BIID”

by Sean - 18 August 2008

I’ve been having a really rough time over the last couple months. Depression hitting harder than usual, and BIID being its usual fierce self. I was not hardy enough, I was not able to duck under cover and let this storm pass. I crashed. Hard. I went to my GP and asked for help. We discussed things and I agreed to try a course of anti-depressants and to go see a psychiatrist. The anti-depressants are not showing great signs of helping, but I can’t swear they aren’t either. Today was my first visit to the psychiatrist. It did not go badly. But it did not achieve anything either.

Addressing the “pretenders for fun” issue

by Sean - 18 July 2008

Rorshach recently objected to a post from Claire, where she was expressing concerns about “Pretendering for kicks”. This post was originally published on a private blog, but permission was given to reprint on this site. You may wish to read it if you haven’t already. This is an important issue that seems to inflame passions. I have some strong opinions on the matter and am going to discuss them here again. Be warned, I might ramble on a bit :)

Tricky questions and opening dialogue

by Sean - 27 April 2008

Someone made a long comment in response to a post I recently made, asking several deep and interesting questions, which were too important to ignore, and too important to let them get burried in a thread with another post. And so, I removed the comment and reproduce it here, and I shall address it, the issues and questions within. It’s good stuff, tricky issues. But further than that, I am glad that someone who has a physical impairment is willing to open dialogue, and learn more about us. In the end, she may not agree, but if she disagrees, she’ll do so on an informed basis, rather than knee jerking!

Ethics

by Sean - 1 July 1997

I’d like to talk about something I believe very important. I may sound vehement and adamant about it, I am. Tonight in a chat room on IRC, someone described an outing they had just arrived from. I will not go into details as to what happened, but I mention one particular event that was described to me, as it is what got me upset.
