Roughing It

I had not been camping since my back injury in December 2006. Mostly it was because of concern about back pain while trying to sleep in a tent. However, my back pain has decreased substantially over the last few months. So, when my male lover invited me to go camping with him in the forest, I couldn’t resist.

Not fully awake and still groggy from so much morphine, I’d forgotten about the halo and vest confinement when I tried to raise up. I first thought it was all a bad dream but it was not. Out of the corner of my eye, I could still see the black bars that made my portable prison a reality. I touched them in horror and started to cry.

Leg braces were usually referred to as "calipers" when I was growing up in England. "Calipers" was the first word I learned to say. Oh alright, I’m just kidding, but I was pretty familiar with them at an early age.
