Playright looking for inspiration

I’ve been contacted by someone who wishes to speak to transabled individuals with the goal to understand Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID) better. She is wanting to write a play with a character who has BIID. This is quite different from the usual request for documentary, as it does not involve direct participation or appearing on camera.

Anna asked me to post the following:

A playwright in New York is looking to start a project that involves a character with BIID and would like to portray it as accurately as possible. The character would like to become deaf and does not like noise and I see her as a teenage girl still living with her parents trying to damage her hearing. I would love any and all input from the BIID community including interviews, particularly from people who wish to be blind or deaf. Anonymity is assured as this is a project where we are breathing life into a character and real names/pictures of yourself are never necessary…just honesty about your BIID in order to get an accurate portrayal of the character.

This could be interesting, and I encourage people to contact her for further information. annajamiescanlon@yahoo.com

Very interesting indeed. I think for it to work, there would need to be some sort of emotional pain that the audience can relate with because right now, I think that’s the one thing preventing “abled-bodied” people (I use quotes because technically, BIIDers are able-bodied as well) from fully understanding us.

Of course, stating that here is preaching to the choir…

About Sean

Sean is transabled. His body image is that of an L2 paraplegic. He has been living pretty much 100% of his public life from a wheelchair for the last decade, but hasn't found peace of mind (and is unlikely to until he does become a para).
