Thinking of a simple surgery, really. Anesthetic, open the thigh, cut the femoral nerve, close up, done. Geee, put it in those terms, and you wonder how difficult could this be? One would think anyone with a modicum of surgical experience should be able to do this (well, aside from putting you under that is). A very simple surgery.

It seems that in defining one’s body, it is only acceptable to make modifications that move closer to what is considered ‘typical’. Features that are considered to be extra, beyond the norm (e.g. a tail, a third arm, dual sex organs, etc), no matter how necessary the individual with them might find them to be, are seen as needing to be removed; conversely, one who is lacking a typical feature (e.g. blindness, deafness, limb-deficiency, mobility deficiencies, etc) is viewed as unfortunate, and a cure for the condition sought - even if the ‘victim’ is quite content as things are.

I’ve tried so many times to describe what it’s like to be out and
about in a wheelchair, for me. Many other people have too. I’ve heard
some people describe it very well, and yet no words can quite capture the true
essence of the feelings.

It is popular knowledge that a lot of suicide attempts are in fact just cries for help. People are feeling overwhelmed by life, and don’t know where to turn for help, nor how to ask for help. And so they resort to trying to kill themselves in hopes (conscious or not) to get help.

Ahhh, body image, what a complicated thing. A complicated and very personal thing. Sometimes influenced by society, sometimes going against mainstream. I see my ideal body image as a para, with limp and atrophied legs. This is far from what society at large sees as ideal, and quite different from what other transabled individuals might seek.
