Did you watch MacGyver? Do you remember the “Jenny’s Chance” episode? ;) I think that was my first awareness of deafness, actually! It’s amusing but in the series MacGyver puts headphones on a deaf girl to test some crazy system that makes deaf people hear…

I wasn’t very old when I started haunting the public library and the local university’s medical library. I was looking for information about orthopaedics, wheelchairs, and other apparatus. It wasn’t long before I was also looking and learning about spinal cord injuries.

About 25 years ago, when I was young, single, employed with a great job, a midwestern boy in The Valley of the Sun, Phoenix, I think I may have met a female wannabe/pretender. But, I’ll never know. I thought (wished) it may have happened again these past two weeks.

A recent post I made on this site and a Yahoo! discussion group prompted a lot of discussion and brought up the nearly age old question of “Does BIID include anyone who wants a different condition than being an amputee?”. I maintain that it doesn’t matter what condition is sought, we all suffer from BIID. Some agree. Others disagree. Others yet are quite vehement in their refusal to have BIID include anything else than “amputation”. And so I decided to go to the source. I emailed Dr. Michael First, who coined the term Body Integrity Identity Disorder.
