by Sean - 23 May 1997

It is not insignificant, but neither is it the most important aspect. It is undoubtedly a part of me, and those who fail to recognize that miss the whole me. I can be made more or less significant by the attitudes and behaviors of others.

How was it broken to you?

by Sean -

It was never actually broken to me by the Doctors, by the time a physiotherapist told me, I knew myself. In fact, I knew, or at least suspected that I had a SCI whilst lying on the ground waiting for the ParaMedics.

How did it happen?

by Sean -

I fell about 30 feet at my workplace and sustained a burst fracture of L1 and 4. This kind of injury doesn’t always result in SCI but I unknowingly was born with a narrower than usual spinal canal and the resultant swelling of the cord caused the paraplegia. L1 (Incomplete) Roughly speaking that is just below the navel at the front rising a bit higher at the back.

How long did it take to totally accept that this was permanent?

by Sean -

Quite soon really, at least on a conscious level. All along I have found the physical side easier to deal with than the way others have treated me. You can learn to cope with all of the physical limitations its the discrimination and stereotyping that you never quite expect.
